Asbestos Awareness Training Session

SSP are committed to ensuring their staff are appropriately trained for their job, and alongside general Health and safety training SSP ensure their site staff are fully appraised of the risks associated with asbestos

On Friday 8th November 2013 all SSP staff who visit sites have had either a UKATA Certified refresher course or a full course in Asbestos Awareness provided by Andy Wood of AMW Health and Safety Services Ltd.

The training session included identification of Asbestos, understanding the risks associated with Asbestos, the sources of Asbestos likely to be encountered both on a day to day basis and also in old and derelict buildings, what to do if you encounter Asbestos and the legislation surrounding Asbestos and the types of Asbestos survey available and required for various operations.

The training day also included an in house seminar on Ecological matters and how legislation is changing and needs to be incorporated in development projects

New SSP Website Launch

SSP have just re-launched their Website which has been updated and refreshed to reflect recent changes within SSP and to be more user friendly on hand held devices.

The site has been refreshed and remodelled to give a fresh new look and provide a better understanding of our capabilities by including brief Case studies.

We would appreciate any feedback positive or otherwise on this new product and hope you return again soon to see further developments and read our news and review future Case Studies.

In conjunction with ga achitects of Sherborne, SSP wins Prestigious Commission in Swanage

Swanage Town Council have tendered the design and supervision contract for the Forres Fields Amenity block. ga Architects have been appointed as lead architect for this prestigious scheme and SSP have undertaken to compile the Flood Risk Assessment for the scheme together with completing the drainage design.

ga Architects are the lead Architects for the project and Williamson Structural Design are appointed as Structural Engineers whist Such Salinger Peters are responsible for the Flood Risk Assessment and drainage infrastructure design.

The scheme valued at around £350,000 is due to commence in Mid September with an anticipated start on site in early 2014.

Apprentice Office Administrator at SSP

Steph Howard a recent school leaver has joined the team at the Wareham Office as part of her Government Approved Apprenticeship.

Such Salinger Peters were looking to recruit a new Administration Assistant for the Wareham Office and were approached by FNTC to see if we were willing to trial an Apprentice In Business Administration as an alternative to employing an experienced member of staff. This was considered a viable way forward as we had previously taken YINI Year In Industry candidiates which had proved very successful.

FNTC Training operates across the South, including Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire the Isle of Wight we can help you gain the relevant experience, skills and qualifications to enable you to succeed in the workplace.

Steph has been with Such Salinger Peters for just over two months and has already learnt many of the routine office tasks and has a good grasp of the way we do business.

CASE STUDY 1

The project involved the design of a replacement structural steel deck jetty with runway beams allowing the boat crane hoist to lift boats in and out of the water.

The existing concrete runway structure was starting to fail in areas with visible signs of cracking.

Such Salinger Peters were commissioned to produce a structural design for a replacement steel framed jetty sat on steel circular piles.

CASE STUDY 2

During the winter of 2012 heavy rainfall destabilised a section of flood defence embankment along the River Brit in Bridport. Due to restricted access through privately owned land the Environment Agency opted to install a long term flood defence solution to avoid the need to return to the site every few years.

Such Salinger Peters were commissioned to produce a detailed design for a replacement flood wall. In order to replace the existing flood bank with a flood wall the topography of the bank was altered creating a much less steep bank. This would allow the Environment Agency easier access to the site to carry out maintenance.

CASE STUDY 3

This scheme was a community project for affordable housing on a brownfield site on the outskirts of Buckland Newton. http://www.lyddenmeadow.co.uk

Such Salinger Peters (SSP) worked with the contractor C.G. Fry and Son to gain consent for this farmstead style development and provided a biodiversity survey to support the planning application. SSP also detailed wildlife mitigation measures during works and recommended ecological enhancements to gain Code 4 Sustainable Homes certification for the scheme.

CASE STUDY 4

Such Salinger Peters were commissioned to undertake an ecological assessment to provide advice for a site in Poole.

The project required a site survey and provided a report with advice in line with guidance. A summary of details for the work follows;
