History

Such Salinger Peters was founded in 1984 by David Such and his father Reg when they joined forces with Ron Salinger, a fellow University Graduate from Cardiff University. The company being called Such Salinger Partnership.

Over the following years the business grew being based in Chepstow and Highcliffe with Ron and David both following their own paths and developing a wide and diverse client base that included the likes of British Steel, Wessex Water and also McCarthy and Stone from a very early stage.

In 1983 Jim Peters joined Ron’s office in Highcliffe and subsequently sat his ICE membership examination and achieved Chartered status. Jim decided he needed to spread his wings and left Such Salinger Partnership Ltd in the mid 1980s and set up a small design consultancy Canford Contract Services and enjoyed a loose working arrangement with Ron over a number of years before joining Wessex Water as a full-time Resident Engineer.

In 1998 Ron and David approached Jim to see if he would come back to Such Salinger Partnership as a joint Director and subsequently the company changed to Such Salinger Peters.

Since 1998 the Dorset operations grew and a third office was created at Winfrith Technology Centre, now Dorset Green, where much work was done for UKAEA, now RSRL, in support of nuclear decommissioning. Having created a third facility the client base was duly expanded and the Company grew in staff numbers to just over thirty full time staff.

Since 2007 however markets changed and the Company has had to re-focus and has reduced staff levels to just over twenty and in late 2012 the Mechanical and electrical office in Chepstow was sold to David Such thus enabling the Dorset Offices to focus on Civil and Structural Engineering clients.

In October 2014 Ron Salinger decided it was time to hang up his slide rule and put away the drawing board when he retired; having seen the firm grow from the very beginning through various recessions before leaving the firm in the safe hands of the Senior Management Team comprising Jim Peters, Arek Kadlec, James Watling and Kirsty Mason.

In September 2015 SSP amalgamated both the Highcliffe and Wareham facilities into one combined operation and continues to offer all previous services from new Offices at 8-10 Dean Park Crescent, Bournemouth BH1 1HL.

Since September 2015 there have been various changes in both Junior and Senior Staff including Directors, see News Articles for details.

Currently, in August 2019 the Company is undertaking a major management and operational review following the departure and arrival of a number of staff members including Jake Bareham as Graduate Engineer along with the arrival of Nick Coram who is responsible for resource programming.

CASE STUDY 1

The project involved the design of a replacement structural steel deck jetty with runway beams allowing the boat crane hoist to lift boats in and out of the water.

The existing concrete runway structure was starting to fail in areas with visible signs of cracking.

Such Salinger Peters were commissioned to produce a structural design for a replacement steel framed jetty sat on steel circular piles.

CASE STUDY 2

During the winter of 2012 heavy rainfall destabilised a section of flood defence embankment along the River Brit in Bridport. Due to restricted access through privately owned land the Environment Agency opted to install a long term flood defence solution to avoid the need to return to the site every few years.

Such Salinger Peters were commissioned to produce a detailed design for a replacement flood wall. In order to replace the existing flood bank with a flood wall the topography of the bank was altered creating a much less steep bank. This would allow the Environment Agency easier access to the site to carry out maintenance.
