Name of Project | Badger Bank Flood Wall Improvements - Bridport |
Nature of Project | During the winter of 2012 heavy rainfall destabilised a section of flood defence embankment along the River Brit in Bridport. Due to restricted access through privately owned land the Environment Agency opted to install a long term flood defence solution to avoid the need to return to the site every few years. Such Salinger Peters were commissioned to produce a detailed design for a replacement flood wall. In order to replace the existing flood bank with a flood wall the topography of the bank was altered creating a much less steep bank. This would allow the Environment Agency easier access to the site to carry out maintenance. As part of the commission Such Salinger Peters carried out sheet pile calculations, structural design details of the wall including integration into existing flood wall and bank, design of access ramp, temporary works design and works method statements. With the site being an active flood defence to the town of Bridport, it was necessary to provide temporary flood defence protection during construction of the scheme. The Environment Agency also had to consider issues with maintaining a suitable habitat for species known to the area. Suitable coir matting was introduced to the reshaped bank to encourage wildlife to habitat again in the bank and adjacent section of river. |
